The medieval view of the universe was seen to comprise a series of concentric spheres, with the Earth - and mankind - at the center. Here the sun as a red circle can be seen going round the Earth. In the outermost sphere is the Empyreum holding the stars, seen here as the zodiac - as in Lausanne rose. The universe was seen to be created by the Word of God projected through His breath (left) and held in place by the "Word made flesh" (right).
