The Secret of the Rose

Part 1

The medieval rose window in Lausanne cathedral is a unique wonder - a kind of symbolic map of the world, of the universe and everything then known, as well as some things imagined - all as seen through the eyes of the early thirteenth century.

It has the stars - seen here as the Zodiac - heavenly bodies include the sun and moon, time as the seasons and months, humanity working, the winds, the earth's remotest inhabitants and the basic elements of 'creation' as then believed: earth, fire, water and air. Also humans' attempts to understand time and things through prophecy.
