Gazetteer

Torbryan, Holy Trinity

The E window tracery lights here have some good C15 figures of female saints, some of which are also painted on to the fine fan-vaulted screen of about the same age. Sts Dorothy and Catherine, for example, appear on both with the same attributes in both portrayals. The window also depicts Sts Anastasia, Bridget and Sidwell (or Sitha — she carries keys and a scythe!) whereas the figures of Margaret, Martha and Apollonia are new. (In the S chancel are the four Doctors of the Church, Sts Gregory, Jerome, Augustine and Ambrose, with their names written on to scrolls - not portrayed here).
