Middleton, St Leonard In the S chancel below other fragmented panels of doors are the figures of seventeen kneeling archers, each with their name and bow, and traditionally held to represent Sir Edward Stanley’s contingent that fought at the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513; they kneel like donor fignres, together with Sir Richard Assheton who appears with his wife and chaplain, Henry Tayler; since the window mentions a date of 1505 (ie seven years before the Battle of Flodden Field) it seems more likely that it was Sir Stanley’s own troop of archers who gave the window to the church
