The Secret of the Rose

An important 'key' to the 'secret' of mediaeval rose windows lies in these two windows at Laon cathedral. The north rose (l) features the Seven Liberal Arts surrounding Philosophy - the love of Wisdom - at the centre.

Philosophy could only be studied when the 7 Liberal Arts - knowledge, information and communication - had been mastered.

Philosophy - Wisdom - is portrayed as a woman with a ladder up to her head - to the mind.

The east rose (r) has the Virgin at the center holding a rose - the symbol of love and the incarnation of Wisdom.
