Wells Cathedral sVII;C16 French glass, probably from St John, Rouen. These panels are related to the two panels in the next window (sVI) and belong to a series depicting scenes from the Life of St John. 1. This follows from the poisoning scene in sVI: Aristodemus converts and is baptised. 2. St John prays and a statue of Diana falls to the ground 3. St John rewards two disciples for their good works by turning sticks on the ground into gold 4. From a different series? St John (in a walled garden - Paradise?) is given a vision of the seven candlesticks. The figure facing away from the viewer is thought to be after Durer and can be interpreted as the Antichist. |
