Chartres cathedral

The North Rose, w.121 (Delaporte 145); Date: C13

The Old Testament surrounds the Virgin

Below the north rose are five large panels four of which have a scene beneath them. L to R they are Melchisedek (Nebuchadnezzar), David (Saul), St Anne with the Virgin, Solomon (Jereboam) and Aaron (Pharaoh).

Beneath St Anne are the arms of France since the window was given by the young King Louis, when Queen Blanche was regent. The youthful Solomon is thought to represent Louis.
