Grodecki (p.175) suggests it was copied from a manuscript and was inspired by Franciscan spirituality. Down the sides are prophets and other Old Testament figures (e.g. David, Moses and Aaron) whilst the central theme is expressed by Adam and Eve at the base and the Redemption of the Crucifixion at the centre.
